The prestigious FICE 2024 International Student Film Festival will screen the film “Thauma Tropes,” showcasing the creativity and expression of students on Mexican screens.
The short film “Thauma Tropes,” created, scripted, and directed by Year 10 students from RED HOUSE, is set to be featured at the Universidad de Monterrey’s (UDEM) International Student Film Festival (FICE) in Mexico. This festival edition, which gathers 138 films from 11 countries, selected the young filmmakers’ movies for the international competitive showcase, a feat highlighting the students’ talent and dedication.
Guided by Professor Filipe Vianna during the Film class, the Campus Perdizes group embarked on a journey of learning and creativity, exploring the history of cinema and experimenting with old animation devices, such as the Thaumatrope, a popular toy in the Victorian era, consisting of a disk with a picture on each side attached by two pieces of string, which inspired the short film’s concept. “The students dedicated themselves, solved problems, and completed the filming. It was gratifying to see how they reacted responsibly and professionally throughout the project,” explains Vianna.
Directed by students Nicholas R., Hector M., Rodrigo A., Duda D., Caroline L., Alicia M., and João Pedro M., the project was born during the Film class as an exercise in personal and collective expression, where each student contributed a unique visual narrative, inspired by the poem “Traduzir-se” by Ferreira Gullar. According to Vianna, “the final result is a collection of poems and visual experiments that very well represent the aspirations, fears, and feelings of students who are about to embark on an academic adventure and also mature as they transition from adolescence to adulthood.”
The work was screened at the Cineteca de Nuevo León, with online streaming on FICE UDEM’s official YouTube channel.
