Amazon Field Trip Expands Horizons and Reinforces Learning Beyond the Classroom

Year 10 students took part in an immersive journey through the Amazon region, combining science, culture, and socio-environmental responsibility in a meaningful educational experience.

From March 2 to 8, our Year 10 students participated in a formative learning experience in the Amazon. The journey began in Manaus, where they visited the Manaus City Museum, the Amazon Theater, the Museum of the Amazon, and other historic landmarks in the city, deepening their connection with the region’s cultural and environmental diversity.

The immersion continued along the Rio Negro to the riverside community of Tumbira, located within the Rio Negro Sustainable Development Reserve. There, our students took part in guided forest hikes, paddled canoes through the igapó flooded forests, and engaged in activities designed to deepen their understanding of local ecosystems. In the community, they also participated in volunteer work, helping build a tank intended for the preservation of Amazonian turtles.

Next, the group visited the village of Acajatuba, where they learned about the Amazon Turtle Project, an initiative dedicated to protecting the species and one that inspired the conservation effort carried out in Tumbira. While there, our students also participated in workshops on natural cosmetics and cooking with Amazonian ingredients, connecting traditional knowledge with sustainability. The experience concluded with a carimbó workshop, celebrating the cultural journey they had built throughout the week.

“The Amazon teaches us that learning means taking responsibility. When our students engage with the land and the community, they expand not only their knowledge but also their sense of purpose,” says Laís Ribeiro, Director of Middle Years at RED HOUSE.
