High School Project in the Amazon Gains Recognition in Exame

Volunteer experience in Acajatuba connects academic learning, social responsibility, and student leadership

Our Service Learning project, which connects education and social responsibility from the early years of schooling, takes 1st-year High School students on a volunteer experience in the riverside community of Acajatuba, in the Amazon. The one-week immersion in the Rio Negro Sustainable Development Reserve was featured in Exame.

During the 2025 immersion, our students worked with the Rio Negro Turtle Project, a community-led initiative created by residents of Acajatuba and local partners, focused on the conservation of endangered species such as the Amazon river turtle and the tracajá. Activities included nest monitoring, egg protection, care for hatchlings, and environmental education initiatives, always in close dialogue with the local community.

Beyond wildlife conservation, the project enhances riverside leadership and values traditional knowledge as a vital component in preserving Amazonian biodiversity. For students, the experience enhanced academic learning by connecting it with social responsibility and citizenship education.

By highlighting the initiative, Exame underscored the importance of an education that goes beyond academic content and contributes to the development of conscious, engaged young people capable of acting both locally and globally.
